5 TIPS FOR JOB HUNTING DURING A RECESSION

Job hunting can be a challenging process at times, Searching for a job during a recession may prove to be even more demanding as lay offs continue and the economy deteriorates. Here are 5 tips on how to find a job during these difficult times.

1. STAY POSITIVE: A positive attitude can go a long way, job hunting can be hard on the self-esteem but attitude is key. If something doesn’t go the way you planned you need to reassess the situation and take our of it what is beneficial to you. Staying optimistic during difficult times is important and hiring managers can sense in an interview what your attitude is. Your general attitude is an indication of how you might react on job to challenging situations. It may also be helpful to implement an exercise plan into your daily routine; this helps you feel better and maintain positive energy throughout your search.

2. NETWORK, NETWORK: Never underestimate the power of your connections, no matter how big or small. Networking is a very effective way to find a new job. It is well known that a large number of jobs are not advertised, and that those positions are filled through word of mouth and referrals. You can develop a list of contacts by starting with your friends and family and if you continue to invest time and energy into it, you can build your network to an even broader range of contacts. You can tap into hidden job market by leveraging your network to give you job leads or introduce you to people who know of available opportunities.

3. BE FLEXIBLE: Be flexible to freelance and temporary work as it could expose you to new skills and experiences. It could also lead to a full-time positive. At the very least you will be meeting new people and bring in additional income while you are searching for a permanent gig. You may also consider volunteering or taking a job that is stepping stone to gain experience. Make sure that the experience lends to your idea job.

4. DO YOUR HOMEWORK: In times where there are more workers and less jobs to fill, employers are more selective than ever. Create a prioritized list of your target jobs and positions that are realistic-who you want to work for. What position you want the most? It helps to have a plan to follow to keep you focused and on tract. Research the companies you’re interested in and evaluate whether or not they are set for growth. You want to look for companies that seem stable and secure. Once you target your companies – pursue them, even if they don’t have any current openings. You never know what may come out of it.
